In furtherance of finest university traditions, Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa featured the 3rd Convocation lecture titled “A University’s Obligation to Humanity and the Ecosystem”, delivered by Professor Michael O. Faborode on Wednesday, 15th November 2017. The Convocation lecturer is a professor of Agricultural Engineering and registered Professional Engineer, who served as Vice-Chancellor at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State and the current Secretary-General of Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.
Professor Faborode was ably represented at the occasion by the former Vice-Chancellor of Wellspring University, Professor Thomas Ofuya, who artfully, with profound erudition and elocution, distilled the crucial relevance of universities to the society. He posited that a nation’s competitiveness in the global economy is predicated on the character of its universities. He noted that universities must have research and innovation as their hallmark and distinguishing features. Consequently, they must be well-funded to be effective in approximating to international standards and expectations.
Professor Faborode encouraged universities to take advantage of the emergence of convergent technologies which have provided a platform for less developed nations, to leverage on the global information network and bridge the necessary gap in knowledge and technology.
Samuel Adegboyega University, according to him, like any other university, is entitled to aspire to be a top-class university, once it can identify its niche and match such determination with the necessity of abundant resources, the concentration of diverse global talents and more importantly, good governance.
The lecture was well attended by representations of town and gown.
