It was an epoch day in the history of Samuel Adegboyega University and the host community Ogwa, Edo State, on Saturday, 19th March, 2016, when the Executive Governor of Edo State, Comrade (Dr.) Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, was awarded Honourary Doctorate Degree (honoris causa) in Public Administration.
The Chancellor, who is also the Visitor of the University, Pastor (Dr.) Gabriel Oladele Olutola, said that Dr. Oshiomhole was being honoured for his contributions to the growth of University, Edo State and the nation at large. Pastor Olutola said that Comrade Oshiomhole had proven himself a worthy Nigerian, whom many had cherished his role in ensuring fairness and equity in collective bargaining with the Federal Government as the President of Labour Congress. He consistently challenged corrupt public officials with facts and figure that were incontrovertible. Pastor Olutola mentioned how Dr Oshiomhole as the Governor of Edo State, successfully overhauled the education policy of Edo State, with emphasis on qualitative education.The sterling quality of Adams Oshiomhole commitment to socio-economic transformation of the country and provision of basic and functional infrastructure in Edo State could not be over emphasized, said the Chancellor.
The Chairman, Board of Trustees of Samuel Adegboyega University, Overseer (Dr) Ebenezer Okebukola, JP, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, appreciated the unquantifiable contributions of Comrade (Dr) Adams Oshiomhole, who has through his constitutional power, contributed to the development of Samuel Adegboyega University. He appealed to the Governor to speak in favour of Tertiary Education Trust Fund intervention for Private Universities in Nigeria. Dr Okebukola said that this would go a long way in promoting infrastructural development and also give private universities the leverage to lower their school fees.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Samuel Adegboyega University, Elder (Dr) Bisi Ogunjobi, OON, described Comrade (Dr) Adams Oshiomhole as the Emeritus President of Nigerian Labour Congress; a true servant of the people who was referred to in Apostle Pauls letter as, No longer as a servant, but more than a servant, a brother beloved, especially to SAU.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Benard Eronmonsele Aigbokhan, congratulated the Awardee, Comrade (Dr) Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole on the Award of Honourary Doctorate Degree (honoris causa) in Public Administration. The Vice-Chancellor said that nothing was too much for the man who had been the friend of the University since came on board. He added that the waiver which the Comrade Governor gave the University on all statutory monies in connection with the Certificate of Occupancy of the land being occupied by SAU could never be forgotten. Prof. Aigbokhan said that despite the challenges faced by private Universities in Nigeria, SAU strived towards being a world-class University. He thereafter pleaded for the support of individuals and corporate bodies for practical support to the University in form of endowments scholarship to students, donations and sponsorships.
Comrade (Dr) Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, a Nigerian with unquantifiable energy, protagonist of positive change and larger than a life accomplished individual, while responding to the award, said that from onset, he knew that Samuel Adegboyega University would be great. In his appreciation to Board of Trustees, Governing Council, Senate and Management of the SAU for the award, he said that he was not surprised at the current level of development of SAU in just four years of operation because the group of people that made up the university governing council were men of intellect and vision. He commended the Management for its relentless effort in making the university a world-class.
Dr Oshiomhole called on parents and guardians who were planning of taking their wards to oversees for study, to bring their wards to Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, where everyone would be nurtured for discipline and excellence. He added that the current trend in the country of taking wards to study in universities of lower standards to Nigerian Universities should be discouraged. He informed the gathering that SAU was far better than some of these institutions.
The event was graced with caliber of men and women from all spares of life, among whom were the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dr Pius Odubu; Head of Service; Chief Judge of the State; Royal fathers across Edo State; Captain Hosa Okunbo (a friend of the Governor), Rt. Revd. Matthew Akhaze Okpebholo, an industrialist; politicians and many more.
